"I chose Matt Shurmer driving school as I was extremely anxious about learning to drive but knew had to do it as I have two young boys.
I read the great reviews that Matt had and contacted him for automatic lessons in Orpington- from the start Matt was so patient and understanding of my anxiety that in the space of a few lessons I went from being absolutely terrified to actually starting to think this was something I could do.
Matt did his best to fit his schedule around mine (extremely limited due to childcare and work) and after 9 months of lessons full of encouragement and lots of patience, I passed my driving test first time with only two faults!!

"Matt Shurmer (Automatic Driving Lessons) really is a class above the rest! Both of my daughters have the required enthusiasm and really want to drive to further their independence.
We initially used a manual driving instructor but for various reasons this just wasn’t working out for either of them. So I started my search for an automatic driving instructor and Matt came highly recommended from one of his ex pupils who had recently passed their driving test thanks to Matt.
Personally I don’t have much faith in most big named companies as they lack that ‘personal touch’ so I’m always on the lookout for a small business who I know will provide the level of care needed and a little bit more.
You can trust Matt Shurmer to provide the best structured driving lessons, as after just a few lessons both my daughter’s were telling me just ‘how good he is’ and that they wished we had found Matt much earlier as they had learnt so much more in a shorter time with Matt, and that he is just so patient, calm, confident and professional with his trainees and thus his confidence then transfers across to the learner!

"Around this time a year ago I was looking for automatic driving lessons in the Orpington area (BR6) and I came across the Matt Shurmer Driving School, and I honestly could not be any happier that I did.
As a man in my late 30s who didn’t have a great history with driving (having tried learning a few times unsuccessfully in the past) I had almost given up hope; I had created a mental block that meant even the thought of driving made me feel very nervous and anxious, so had resigned myself to the fact that I would never be a driver.

From the start, Matt was exceptional- very quickly building an understanding of where I was at with my driving and what we needed to work on to get me "test ready".

"I’m based in Sidcup DA15 and went with Matt for my automatic driving lessons. I started learning to drive later in life (34 y/o) as I had been so nervous to try driving when I was younger.
Matt instantly put me at ease and always helped me to feel in calm and in control when behind the wheel. I also found out I was pregnant with my first child when I started lessons so being able to pass my test became even more important and time constrained!
Matt provided some fantastic resources to help me revise and prepare for my theory test (passed first time) and coached me through the practical driving side at a pace that made me comfortable. "I took my automatic driving lessons in Swanley BR8 and I was absolutely blown away with Matt and his teaching skills. I passed my test first time with 0 faults – something I never thought possible. Matt brings a lovely mix of friendliness & professionalism. When I started learning to drive I started in a manual car and I felt really unconfident. I spoke to Matt to say I wasn’t sure if I didn’t enjoy driving or if it was because I couldn’t get along with the clutch. Matt took me out for a trial to see how I was in an automatic and we got along instantly and I felt confident learning to drive with him. Matt has a true talent for teaching people how to drive, he breaks everything down into easily manageable chunks so he doesn’t overwhelm you and gets you to repeat it until you’re confident. He didn’t teach me to pass my test, he taught me to be a confident driver and I couldn’t have done it without him. Matt is also great value for money, the knowledge he gives you and the extra’s e.g. help passing your theory test are really useful. I have no doubt if I hadn’t learnt to drive with Matt I would have given up learning to drive."

"I had tried driving lessons with an instructor a few years ago and was completely put off by the experience, but decided to give driving a second chance when I moved to Orpington (BR5). Having had such a negative experience previously Matt was very understanding and extremely patient with me. He pushed me to do my best and was full of positivity when I doubted myself. I passed my test today first time, and I can honestly say it's all down to Matt and his amazing guidance. Now I can drive it's opened up a whole new world of freedom and even allowed me to achieve my dream job which requires me to have a driving license. Learning to drive with Matt was really great. He made me feel very relaxed and comfortable every single lesson and even on the morning of the test. Towards the end I felt more like I was going out for a drive with one of my friends rather than a driving lesson.

I initially had a few lessons with a manual car but I decided to switch to automatic. “I had seen Matt Shurmer around a lot and also had 2 friends who had used them before, both highly recommending them. I always expected that learning how to drive was going to be difficult for me as I am heavy handed and have very little coordination. I started by leaning in a manual and quickly realised that I would be more suited with auto, as it would be one less thing to worry about. Once I stared leaning auto with Matt, I was much more comfortable. His positive approach built up my confidence and I was finding somethings easier than I thought they would be. Matt was a very positive teacher that made me feel comfortable with little worries. Some aspects that I was finding hard with other teachers, like manoeuvres, he broke down into small easy steps that made it much easier and less daunting. Despite being nervous, Matt was able to put me at ease with his calm demeanour, effective instructing and great conversations. Matt was always firm but fair. Although I was nervous a lot, reassurance was always given and I was never made to feel silly or incompetent. Having mock tests and driving regular routes was a great help and really had a positive impact on my driving experience. Matt is a great instructor. He was always so patient, friendly and kind. His methods were fantastic and suited my learning style completely, from finding ways to remember manoeuvres to gently prompting me to remember what I had already learned previously. Matt always responded quickly to queries and always found time to fit me in for lessons. I would definitely recommend Matt Shurmer to family and friends; the quality of teaching during lessons was amazing. I felt safe at all times during lessons even if I was nervous, which is reassuring for first time drivers. The patience and skill provided during lessons and my very positive experience with Matt, would urge me to recommend this driving school to anyone wanting to learn how to drive. Honestly, I cannot fault any part of my experience. Matt always managed to organise lessons around my work pattern and kept me informed of any changes. “I chose Matt Shurmer Driving School because I was looking for a local instructor who could teach me quickly in an automatic and one who would be patient with me given my lack of confidence. I rang a few companies up but I was really impressed with the quick and professional response from Matt. This professionalism continued throughout my learning experience which was structured and had defined goals explained to me throughout. I always felt Matt had my best interests at heart ensuring that I progressed at the right pace for me so that I didn’t spend more on lessons than I needed to. Matt instilled good driving skills in me from my first lesson and taught me to be an intuitive driver but whenever he saw that I needed extra guidance with a particular aspect of driving he gave me the techniques to use which really helped.
