⭐Well done to our Star Driver of the Week Tong G from Petts Wood, Orpington BR5 💥
I have only seen Tong for approximately 4 weeks, as she was doing manual lessons before. She was struggling to put everything together in the manual car, but since changing to automatic, she has found learning to drive so much easier.
We have spent the last few weeks revisiting and refreshing her Meeting Traffic, Crossroads, and Roundabouts knowledge and today we put it all to the test with a drive through Crittals Corner roundabout and Ruxley roundabout in Sidcup.
The area is reasonably unfamiliar to her, but she coped really well with the different challenges she faced, and hardly put a foot wrong. 👊👊
⭐Our Star Driver of the Week is Priscilla P from Bromley BR1 💥
Priscilla had a great driving lesson this week. After having an enforced week off due to the fuel shortage, she was quite nervous today, but you wouldn't have known it!
She coped with everything I threw at her- tricky meeting traffic situations, difficult roundabouts, and a very demanding right turn at a very busy crossroads which she absolutely nailed- twice! 🔥🔥
Well done Priscilla- a driving lesson to be proud of. 👍
⭐ Some great work this week in her driving lesson by Alice S of Hextable, Swanley on her parallel parking to become our Star Driver of the Week. 💥
With very little input from me, Alice was able to work out a method that works for her, and together we were able to find a strategy for what to do when the parallel park didn’t go quite right. Alice seems quite fortunate currently in the fact that the manoeuvres just seem to ‘make sense’ to her. 🚘
While I can give pupils a method that ‘just works’ to be able to parallel park consistently, it is massively important that pupils are allowed to try to find their natural way of doing it, with me offering suggestions on how to refine the manoeuvre. 🚘
Being able to correct issues is just as important as being able to get it right first time, as nobody gets it right every single time. On the day of the driving test, the examiner isn’t overly concerned if you don’t get it right, as long as you can correct the situation.
With pupils who are unable to get it wrong by themselves, I will often force them into getting it wrong so they can work out/ prove/ show that they can solve the problem- real life driving!
⭐ Well done again Alice! 💥🚘
🌟Well done to Hannah M from Sidcup on being this week's winner of our 'Star Driver' of the Week award!
Hannah has only had 3 driving lessons and we are mostly working on her steering at the moment.
Having dyspraxia, Hannah is having to work extremely hard to get to grips with the coordination required to steer, and getting those necessary connections between her eyes and her hands.
In her favour, she has bundles of determination and is determined to fight the car into submission.💥💥💥
I'm really looking forward to see her development as we progress through the driving syllabus.
Well done Hannah 😀
Charlotte followed up a lovely driving lesson last week where we learned how to turn right at major junctions (crossroads), with a stunning roundabouts lesson.
We completed 30 roundabouts in 90 minutes (averaging one every 3 minutes) and Charlotte showed increasing understanding and development on each one, as they became more complex. Doing this during rush hour made this a more difficult lesson, and I look forward to next week's lesson where we will start work on multi- lane roundabouts! 🔥🔥🔥😱😱😱
Well done Charlotte 😀
🌟Well done to Emma H from Orpington on being the first winner of our 'Star Driver of the Week' award! 🌟
Emma has had two fantastic driving lessons this week- the first one she drove beautifully, and above her general level of experience. 💥 💥 💥
Today, she has learnt to successfully parallel park, through a mixture of trial and error, and relevant questioning from me.
We finished with a great parallel park around her brothers car outside her house- massive pressure as apparently his car is his pride and joy.
Things have really started to click for Emma recently, and now we can start towards a successful driving test towards the end of this year.🔥🔥🔥
Well done Emma 😀
My business is built on reputation and happy customers. Your feedback will be used to improve my service and tuition going forward.
Absolutely, definitely, YES! You will definitely be driving on your first lesson.
If you are new to driving, I will drive you to a suitable location to get you started. It’s vital that your first few lessons are conducted in an area that will ensure your success and build your confidence.
I will take a few minutes to record your licence details, test your eyesight and explain how to adjust your seat, head restraint and make sure you are comfortable.
I will then explain the controls that you will need to operate during your first lesson.
You will then be given a briefing on the move off and stop procedure with a short discussion to ensure you understand what is required.
You will then be given full talk through and will be guided through your practical driving session. You will be able to learn at your own pace and will progress through each topic as and when you feel ready.
I find that, for most pupils, taking a 90-minute or 2- hour lesson every week proves to be the most successful strategy for most students.
90- minute or 2- hour lessons are far more beneficial to you! You will learn far more for your money and you will also be test ready quicker. You will have a decent amount of condensed learning in one go, with time to digest and be focused for your next lesson.
Taking a regular weekly lesson has proven success as it provides continuity, the retention of knowledge, and it will reduce your learning period. We will aim to offer you a regular lesson slot that you can book in advance and keep from the time you commence your lessons until you pass your test.
You will also be able to book more than one lesson slot per week should you wish to reduce your learning period and be test ready sooner (subject to instructor availability).
That is a really good question.
Most people wrongly assume that all driving instructors and schools are the same! We are absolutely not.
I am extremely proud of the quality and the overall unique service that the school provides.
Some schools just offer you the lessons themselves, whereas we provide a complete service including free online theory training, free training book, free dedicated 'Learn to Drive' app, and free additional help for nervous or anxious pupils.
A number of local schools also price their lessons by 50 minutes, which makes them look A LOT cheaper than us, whereas in reality we are all priced really closely.
Honestly, I don't know.
It really is impossible for me to know until you begin your tuition and I see how you respond to me, the car, and the learning experience.
The DVSA suggest that the average is around 45- 50 hours, but in reality I find that most of my students are test ready sooner than that.
It really does depend on the individual, but my recommendation is to talk more specifically about this once I have seen you a couple of times.
Yes, I do, and I usually really enjoy it, but it does depend on the circumstances.
I do not pretend to be an expert, or that I possess special training for certain disabilities.
But I do have substantial experience of both living with, and teaching people, who come under the umbrella of the autistic spectrum, have dyslexia/ dyspraxia or other additional needs, so I am happy to chat and see if we match up.
If you live in Orpington (BR5/ BR6), Sidcup (DA14/ DA15), Bromley (BR1/ BR2, BR7) and Swanley (BR8) then yes I do!
Pupils will often select an instructor on a 'near me' basis, but instructors generally all know our closest localities really well, so you don't necessarily need to choose an instructor who lives the closest to you.
Matt Shurmer Driving School have been established since 2007.

Matt Shurmer Driving School offer “Success Based Lessons”. So what exactly does that mean? Well, it means that each driving lesson is constructed to both build confidence as well as learning new skills or building on existing skills. The school conducts client centred lessons, which involves pupil interaction as to what will be covered on each session and how and why it fits in to the learning syllabus.
Each lesson will commence with an interactive discussion to establish the subject to be covered. It’s important that pupils completely understand what the objective of each lesson is and what they are looking to achieve during the session. A successful lesson is one that can be measured from the setting of the objective to the closing summary to ascertain what has been learnt and how that knowledge and skill will take the learner closer to their goal of successfully passing their driving test and keeping them safe on Britain’s roads.
Please explore our website and read what we have to offer. Should you come to the conclusion that we would be your best option to prepare you for your driving test, then simply call 07982 236493 and I will be delighted to listen to your requirements, check current availability see what we can match up.
For your safety and reassurance, I am fully DBS (CRB) checked and FULLY qualified.
Thank you for your visit and good luck with your driving experience.
