Yes, you will definitely be driving on your first lesson.
If you are new to driving, your instructor will drive you to a suitable location to get you started. It’s vital that your first few lessons are conducted in an area that will ensure your success and build your confidence.
Your instructor will take a few minutes to record your licence details, test your eyesight and explain how to adjust your seat, head restraint and make sure you are comfortable.
He/she will then explain the controls that you will need to operate during your first lesson.
You will then be given a briefing on the move off and stop procedure with a short discussion to ensure you understand what is required.
Your instructor will then give you full talk through and guide you through your practical driving session. You will be able to learn at your own pace and will progress through each topic as and when you feel ready.
We find that, for most pupils, taking a 2-hour lesson every week proves to be the most successful strategy for most students.
2-hour lessons are far more beneficial to you! You will learn far more for your money and you will also be test ready in half the time. You will have a decent amount of condensed learning in one go, with time to digest and be focused for your next lesson.
Sometimes students think that they would be unable to concentrate for a period of two hours, but this is why we would ‘chunk’ your lessons and break up the two hour slot to cover several topics, just as they do at school to keep the learning fresh and focused.
Taking a regular weekly lesson has proven success as it provides continuity, the retention of knowledge, and it will reduce your learning period. We will aim to offer you a regular lesson slot that you can book in advance and keep from the time you commence your lessons until you pass your test.
You will also be able to book more than one lesson slot per week should you wish to reduce your learning period and be test ready sooner. (Subject to instructor availability)
*Please note that we don't just teach in 2- hour blocks, but we DO recommend it.
We try to be as transparent as possible and despite our best efforts, when you have been providing driving lessons for a number years and taught thousands of students, there will be mistakes made and misunderstandings on both sides.
We raise our hands if we fail to deliver the best possible experience. We don't get it right all of the time, but if we are in the wrong, we will apologise and try to correct the issue to everyone's satisfaction.
We will always try to deal with any complaint fairly, as our business is based on our local reputation.
It really is impossible for us to know until you begin your tuition and we see how you respond.
The DVSA suggest that the average is around 45- 50 hours, but in reality we find that most of our students are test ready sooner than that.
It really does depend on the individual, but our recommendation is to talk more specifically to your instructor once we have seen you a couple of times.
That is a really good question.
Most people wrongly assume that all driving instructors and schools are the same! We are absolutely not.
We are extremely proud of the quality of our instructors and the overall unique service that the school provides.
Some schools just offer you the lessons themselves- we provide a complete service including free online training and free online theory plus so much more.
Yes, we do but it does depend on the circumstances.
Our instructors do not pretend to be experts, or that they possess special training for certain disabilities.
But we have a number of instructors within the school who have substantial experience of both living with, and teaching people, who come under the umbrella of the autistic spectrum, have dyslexia/ dyspraxia or other additional needs.
Driving tuition might seem like a straightforward process that can be formulated and systematically applied to each student. In actuality every individual pupil learns at different rates and with different teaching methods. When you are picking a driving school, steer clear of ‘one size fits all’ attitudes, as a good instructor should be able to adapt to all learning styles.
Matt Shurmer Driving School takes this a step further, by offering completely client-centred lessons. Not only are you not given a set lesson structure to work through but you have the freedom to express whether you feel like a certain area could use more work.
For instance at Matt Shurmer Driving School you will never be put under pressure to complete a task you don’t feel ready to do.
Our instructors pride themselves on being flexible and dynamic to deliver the best lessons for each respective pupil.
There are lots of factors to consider when you are making that all-important decision of which driving school to pick. Some people wrongly assume that the choice isn’t so important, as much as the work you are willing to put into learning. This is not the case. Your driving instructor can accelerate your learning, or they can actually impede it and set you back.
When it comes to investing your own hard-earned money, or your parents’ money into driving lessons you want to make sure you are going to get great value for money! The instructor who is closest to your house may be tempting but you may be surprised to hear that proximity really doesn’t matter. In fact most driving instructors will pick you up and drop you back off at your house for your lesson provided they cover your area at no extra charge.
Reviews and recommendations should demand your attention. Look at what previous pupils have to say – what were their favourite things about the instructor? If there are a large number of past students singing praises for the instructor then you’re off to a good start.
We have 21 different fully-qualified driving instructors that are CRB/ DBS checked and registered for your complete peace of mind.
Matt Shurmer Driving School has been established since 2007 and is an experienced and trustworthy local driving school with a well-earned reputation in the local area.
Most importantly student success is at the forefront of what we do and we hope that whichever driving school you opt for, that your journey in getting your licence pays off!
Automatic lessons are offered in most areas.
For your safety and reassurance, all of our instructors are DBS (CRB) checked and FULLY qualified.
You can choose between male and female driving instructors in most areas.
